Festive self assessment tax returns reach record levels

A record number of self assessment tax returns were completed during the festive season, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has revealed.

The latest figures from HMRC show that 1,773 tax returns were submitted online on 25 December 2014, up from last year’s total of 1,566.

The peak time for submitting returns on Christmas Day was between 12 and 1pm. A total of 24,228 returns were received between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.

Meanwhile, HMRC has also published a list of the ‘top 10’ strangest excuses given by taxpayers for failing to file their return.

Some of the more unusual reasons given include: ‘my pet dog ate my tax return…and all the reminders’; ‘I was up a mountain in Wales, and couldn’t find a postbox or an internet signal’; and ‘I’ve been travelling the world, trying to escape from a foreign intelligence agency’.

Around 11.2 million people are expected to fill out a tax return for the 2013/14 tax year.

Tax returns must be submitted by the deadline of 31 January 2015, or taxpayers face an initial fixed penalty of £100, even if there is no tax to pay, or if the tax due is paid on time.
