Businesses ‘must support employees’ in taking their careers forward

Businesses should ensure that they help employees to move up the career ladder as the economic recovery takes hold, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

The business group has advised that as finances begin to improve for many firms, business owners should focus on delivering growth in order to improve wages and boost opportunities for employees, while also supporting young people entering the working world for the first time.

John Cridland, CBI Director-General, said, ‘For the first time since the start of the recession, 2014 will see most firms increasing the size of their workforce, boosting their graduate intake and the number of apprentices they take on.’

‘The future of the UK economy is undoubtedly higher-value and higher-skill, so training is critical to helping people move onwards and upwards, and key to our national success, particularly when it comes to delivering an effective industrial strategy.’

However, Mr Cridland highlighted the importance of retaining flexibility in the UK labour market and warned against the introduction of ‘inappropriate regulation’.
