UK businesses ‘keen to remain in the EU’

The majority of UK businesses are in favour of remaining in the European Union, according to a recent survey conducted by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and YouGov.

Of the businesses surveyed, eight out of ten revealed that they would vote in favour of the UK’s continuing membership of the EU, with many raising concerns over the impact that an exit would have on Britain’s competitiveness, as a consequence of reduced access to trading markets and business investment.

Nevertheless, many firms want to see fundamental changes to the UK’s existing relationship with the EU, with many calling for a reduction in regulations, including an end to the ‘gold-plating’ of legislation, together with the fair implementation of EU rules across all member states.

Commenting on the results of the survey, John Cridland, Director-General of the CBI said, ‘Firms want what is best for jobs and growth, and there is genuine concern that an exit would hit business investment and access to the world’s largest trading bloc’.

‘Businesses do have some serious concerns about the EU, but ultimately they want the UK inside the tent winning the argument for reform.’
