Businesses offered tax relief for managing sickness absence

Employers who pay for measures to help their employees return to work after a period of sickness absence could be entitled to tax relief, following measures announced in the 2013 Budget.

The relief will apply to expenditure of up to £500 on health treatment recommended by the new health and work assessment and advisory service, which is being introduced in 2014.

The tax relief will apply to income tax and employer national insurance contributions and is expected to support around 110,000 health-related interventions.

Minister for Welfare Reform Lord Freud said, ‘The introduction of tax relief for interventions and the health assessment and advisory service will help British business to hold on to their staff, help workers stay in work and cut the sickness benefit bill by up to £60 million per year’.

The Government will launch a consultation on the relief later this year.
